Dr Wayne Dyer, well known author and speaker, amongst other things, speaks of the value of who you are being as natural sincerity. It is the intent to be honest in our daily lives. This is not ego based, it is not the ‘face’ that we put out to the world that our ego demands, rather it is our ability to be naturally sincere in what we do.
Dyer speaks of this as ‘This quality results when you allow others to know you, without being afraid or worrying about how you’re being perceived. Your speech and behavior basically send this message: This is who I am. I came into this world with an inner calling to fulfill a destiny that will never be silenced.”
Children’s author Dr Seuss articulates it well with the lines: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind“.
If you are out of sync with your truth, and true self, you will experience unhappiness, and frustration, feelings of being trapped in a life that is not aligned to your purpose. And when you have clients who sadly express these same experiences you will know what is underlying this. And as coaches, we have such great opportunity to generously and without ego, share and serve our clients to recognise what is truly going on and guide them through their change. Knowing that you (and/or your clients) are living away from your ‘natural sincerity’ is an opportunity to move back to meaning and purpose.
Dr Dyer sums it up beautifully in his book The Shift, when he says “Don’t ask what the world needs; don’t ask what others think you should be doing with your life. Instead, ask yourself what makes you come alive – because, more than anything else, what the world truly needs are men and women who have come alive. What the world needs is the natural sincerity of people living their passion in a way that makes other people’s lives better. This is what being authentic looks like....”. Dyer cites Lao-tzu in summary by saying that natural sincerity is something that shows up as “honesty and a determination to be faithful to one’s truest, most authentic self”.
And so, students of The Coaching Institute, we invite you to be your sincere self and be confident that this is what serves all of us to create the best version of ourselves and our true purpose.
