You Have More Courage Than you Would Ever Think You Have

“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

I sat with my amazing wife Beth recently and watched the “Karate Kid” movie starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. ( I still vividly remember the first one by the way!)
I’m a sucker for a movie with strong characters, I can’t help but to become emotionally involved with their journey. Dre (played by Jaden), the small kid who is bullied by bigger, older kids. And Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), the kung fu master disguised as a maintenance man. Of course the great Mr Miagi still resonates…
As the story played out, I remember how the original gripped me, how it was never a story about punching and kicking or sweeping the leg. It was about the courage to keep getting up and of course about love.
Afterwards, I thought about the star, the real-life Jaden Smith, son of small screen prodigy turned Hollywood legend Will Smith.
I have been a huge Will Smith fan since his early TV work… As a student of success and its causes, I have studied him carefully, because he has a unique claim to fame.
He is the only person who has hit the top of the charts in all three major entertainment categories: music, TV, and movies.
Elvis didn’t do it. Kylie Minogue didn’t. Madonna didn’t. Mariah Carey didn’t.
Only Will Smith, the Fresh Prince from Philly, did it.
And watching junior Smith on the screen, it’s easy to see his father in him. His facial expressions, mannerisms, his total confidence in himself, — you can see Wills influence.
It really started me thinking about where courage really comes from.
Imagine how confident young Jaden must be to have someone like Will Smith believing in him. But really, it’s just his dad right?
Of course, if you ask his dad, I bet he’d tell you that Jaden has more confidence than he himself had at that age.
And that’s the way it should be. I know I built on the example of my parents, who built on their parents, and so on. At 18 when I strapped on my backpack for the first time and took on the World, my parents were gob-smacked that I had no plans for accommodations or where I was heading.. Think about this in your life, don’t you have more faith in yourself than your parents had?
The word courage comes from the Latin word “cor, meaning “heart.” And isn’t it interesting how many times we refer to the heart when talking about people who act with both kindness and courage:
“He spoke from his heart.”
“She’s all heart.”
“Follow your heart.”
Follow your heart. It sounds so simple doesn’t it? . And perhaps it is simple — but it isn’t always easy.
Sometimes following our heart is the last thing we want to do — because our HEAD tells us we’re crazy!
For example, when I left the safety of teaching to start my own video analysis business in 2004, I had no business skills, no money, no contacts, and no idea how to run a profitable business.
7 years on (and having met my wife when I made the shift) I have realised that it was always going to work out ok…I just needed to work every day on who I needed to be to make it work!
The beginning is always to have the courage to follow your heart…

Time Mangement Tips..

Productivity Tips

Here are five quick and easy Time Management Habits you can learn and implement today.

1. Low Information Diet
2. Parkinson’s Law of Perceived Importance
3. Saying No
4. ½ Hour of Power
5. 80/20 Rule
1. Low Information Diet
We live in a world full of information and the temptation exists to digest as much information as possible. Information is time consuming and most the information you consumer is either negative or irrelevant to your goals. (Think newspaper, TV, Magazines, Social Blogs.) Time management is really about making better use of your time. Living on a low-information diet is one way to do this.
For the next week:
• No reading emails before 11:00am. You may quickly scan for urgent emails if required by your role. Use this time instead to achieve one of your most important goals for the day
• Avoid newspapers, magazines or talk-back style radio
• Stop visiting news and non-goal related blogs and websites. No web surfing
• Limit your television viewing to one hour of relaxation viewing only
• Before you digest any information, ask yourself – Will this information help me achieve one of my immediate and important goals?
With all the free time this will create you can complete your daily actions that will move you closer to your 90 day goals.

2. Parkinson’s Law of Perceived Importance
If I gave you 24hrs to produce a report on the impact of room temperature on staff productivity, the time constraints would force you to focus and take action. If I gave you a week, you would spend five days considering options and two days preparing the report. If I gave you a month it would sit on the ‘back-burner’ for two weeks, then you would call a meeting to discuss, send a series of back and forth emails and create the final report in the last two days, am I right?
Parkinson’s Law states that “a tasks perceived importance and complexity will increase in relation to the time allotted for its completion.” In other term, the longer you allow for a task to be completed, the more complex and important that task is perceived.
The solution is simple. Shorten time frames to reduce the perception of complexity of tasks.

3. Saying No
Even more powerful than setting short time frames, is just saying no. It works like this:
Do you think you could put together a report on the impact of room temperature on staff productivity?”
Reply: “No.”
If you’re a bit of a ‘softy’, you could replace the ‘no’ with, ‘I would be happy to help you, but I need you to show me how this will help us achieve our goal of (Insert important agreed upon business goal for which this task is not relevant).”

4. ½ Hour of Power
Want a tip to help you get out of bed each morning? Every night before bed spend 30 minutes setting your actions for tomorrow. Decide what actions you will achieve tomorrow to move you closer to your 90 day goals.

5. 80/20 Rule
I put this one last because it’s one of the more common time management habits and you may have learnt in the past. That said, it’s far too powerful to leave out and worthy of a reminder.
The 80/20 rule states that 80% of outputs are the result of 20% of inputs. For example, 80% of profit is the result of 20% of customers. This also means that the remaining 20% of outputs are the result of your other 80% of inputs. (i.e. the other 20% of profits is made up by 80% of customers.)
To take back your time you must identify the 20% of inputs that create the 80% of outputs. For example, cold calling 20 clients per day for two hours per day produces one new client per week, whereas one phone call to a local business partner asking to meet and discuss a joint venture takes two hours in total and leads to 10 new clients.
80% of the results you have achieved this year are the result of 20% of your actions. Identify what’s creating the most output and scrap the rest.

Oprah meets a TCI student !!

I believe in dreams, but you have to take action” – Oprah Winfrey December, 2010

May I share a story with you, my fellow coaches?

My head is still spinning from the events of the past week. It’s all a little surreal and I’m still processing all of it…… my synapses are overloaded!

Last Friday evening I had dinner with Oprah.

I was incredibly fortunate to be invited to join my lovely friend, Megan Castran, and sixteen other guests for a ‘Taco Night’ dinner.

This is actually very much Megan’s story so I’ll give you run down on how this dinner came to fruition. Megan is a jeweller, a prolific You Tube video blogger (Jewel Chic channel) and she has a phenomenal following on facebook for her ‘Jewel Chic” page.

Megan and I met and developed our friendship while boxing at our training studio – we both have a competitive streak and spur each other on to fuel our desire to be fit, healthy and strong for ourselves and our families. Megan LOVES Oprah. Oprah inspires her, Oprah was the impetus for her jewellery business and Oprah is Megan’s passion. Megan has met Oprah a couple of times and on one occasion passed her business card to Oprah. Oprah kept it in her draw for four years with a promise that if she ever came to Australia she would look Megan up!
Oprah kept her promise.

Oprah arrived at Megan’s door (cue squealing, gasping and astonishment from myself and all my ‘Taco Night’ buddies!!), with two bottles of tequila. We had Taco’s, did tequila shots with Oprah, ate cake, danced to Ross Wilson singing ‘Eagle Rock’ (there’s a You Tube video of us dancing – I’m the not-so-groovy but wildly enthusiastic dancer in the pink dress) and Oprah conducted a round-table discussion on a range of topics which was filmed and will become part of the four ‘Australian’ shows.

Oprah is extraordinary. She was warm, funny, highly intelligent, down-to- earth and her presence is palpable. She is also very beautiful and smiles and laughs constantly. In coaching we refer to our ‘physiology’ – Oprah’s physiology is exceptional. Her rapport and ability to connect with every person in the room was unique and powerful.

I trust you will enjoy looking at the photo I’ve included with this article. It is a very special picture for me because I did have a private conversation with Oprah for a few minutes. Just Oprah and I. You can see us with our heads together. Our coaching training in ‘questioning’ came to the fore. I asked Oprah a question, and I think she was completely surprised. I could devote another whole article to this brief discussion with Oprah, suffice to say that I listened; I was curious, I was aware of my own physiology and instinctively matched and mirrored. I felt completely at ease in my conversation with her, and at the conclusion of the chat she asked for my name. My conversation with Oprah has had a profound effect on me.

But there’s more…..

Oprah then invited us to come to Sydney to see her show at the Opera House. We flew in a private Gulfstream 450 jet (worth 47million and only six months old) by Southern Cross Jets. Stayed in Potts Point and designer Camilla Franks dressed us for the show.

Tuesday morning saw our ‘Taco Team’ ushered into the second and third rows of the Opera House for the show. I was deeply moved by Terri Irwin’s interview when talking about raising children on her own; loved Jay Z discussing how RAP is a forum for young people to tell their story, and then we rocked to Bon Jovi. John Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora only meters away!

We were all then taken backstage to join Oprah and her Producers at the end of the show.

It was an incredible experience on so many levels. My gratitude to Megan for my invitation to be part of the Oprah Taco-Night is immeasurable. I am simply over-joyed to have witnessed her happiness and her dream come true.

It is now 12months since I sat in the room at TCI for my intake weekend.

The difference in me personally in the past twelve months is enormous.

There is much to share about my own story and my personal and professional circumstances, however one of the greatest changes in me is that I don’t dwell in the past anymore, I am just so excited about the future. What you focus on is absolutely what you get!

Thank you for taking the time to read my little story and share with me in some pretty exciting recent events.

May I conclude by extending my appreciation and gratitude to Sharon, Joe and all of the TCI team. It has been the learning, the guidance, knowledge and support provided by TCI that has been a huge factor in my recent events. Also, a very special thanks to my own coaches, mentors and friends who have supported me throughout the year – Hay Lam Yau, Shiona Long and Laura Hanu.

I would like to conclude with something that Oprah shared with us after the cameras were switched off…. She reminded us about the laws of motion – what we put out will determine what we get back, and that we must Dream Large, Have Deep belief and take Massive Action.

I have this feeling that there’s more to come so stay tuned!

Best wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous New Year.

The 3 Biggest Mistakes Coaches Make Coming Up To Christmas

1. Not Proactively Dealing With any Christmas Dramas Your Clients Have Before They Come Up.
The reality is, most people and businesses are either insanely busy over Christmas, or ridiculously quiet. Either way is potentially risky for your coaching relationship. You need to actively chase any of the possible objections, and get them out of your client’s minds so they stay keep hangin’ with you into the new year. As I always say to my clients “have the chat” which simply means pick up the phone and let them know why now may be the time they need you most!
2. Calling Off The Chase For New Clients Too Early.
Did you know that nearly all coaches stop looking for clients right about NOW..
That means you have a golden opportunity to up your ante…”.
If you are going to go surfing, take in some Ashes or hang with the kids and take some time out then good for you….
But if you want clients, you need to continue using the great tactics we teach you right through until new year. Only stop hunting when you don’t want more clients. There is never a slow period in coaching – there is just a slow period in your mindset…
3. Not Building An Awesome Pipeline of New Clients For The Start of 2011.
You do not need to start the new year from scratch.. Think about it, the break is just like a longish weekend and you simply must keep momentum..
What are you doing to continue getting leads and looking after the leads you already have?. Can you invest just a few hours to build a plan for the break so your coaching wheel keeps turning? Your New Year will start with a bang if you leave this year with a plan…

Perhaps it’s time to talk with Kirby and develop your plan for 2011?

Cheers and have an awesome day!

Another week and another 7 days packed with action at The Coaching Institute. One of the highlights for me was greeting our newest students at their Foundations of Coaching Success weekend and being part of a room of people who were moving towards a new and exciting future. Congratulations to you all and welcome aboard! Please be sure to drop me an email from time to time, sharing the highlights of your journey as you face new and exciting boundaries… and blast through them with joy.

Sharon rocked the house in another 5 Day Closed Door Mastermind training. This membership group were buzzed as they set up and launched on-line sales and the room was filled with cheer as they then acknowledged the new leads they were attracting. When was the last time you attended a business seminar and launched your business live in the training? I have to say it had never happened to me prior to joining Mastermind. I was chatting with some of our members on the last day of their training and the overwhelming feedback was how amazed they were that Sharon shared so many inner secrets as to how her own business is structured and executed. To have the back door stage pass to the biggest rock concert in town is a rare gift- and it was truly appreciated by the group. Well done guys, the Mastermind team at The Coaching Institute salute you and look forward to hearing of your ongoing growth and success.
To complete the week that was, Sharon then immersed herself into the Mastermind Selling From The Stage training. The students left The Coaching Institute with the keys to creating a million dollar year, and boy were they excited! This was the first time Sharon has delivered this training and she was playing at 110% (as always). To model Sharon as a trainer will guarantee ongoing success for any trainer; no matter how high the workload or new the content is to deliver, she is always 100% prepared and ready to go. No excuses, no hesitation, no doubt…
Christmas is coming, and I look forward to seeing many of you here at The Coaching Institute Christmas Party this Thursday at 7pm. If you have not yet RSVP to let us know you are coming, now is a great time to do so admin@thecoachinginstitute.com.au Be sure to vote for your favourite mentor, facilitator, fellow student, trainer, coach & connect leader, TCI team member no matter if you can attend the party or not. The team here are primed ready to celebrate your success and ongoing journey with us and to acknowledge stand out performers will be our pleasure. TOYS TOYS TOYS… If you are coming along and would love to donate to a worthy cause, Sharon Pearson and her team will be delivering toys to the children of the Women’s mission this week, so if you would like to add to Sharon’s gifts, bring along toys (unwrapped please) and Christmas tree and we will be delighted to deliver them. (Toys must be brand new and if requiring batteries, please attach the correct size and quantity of batteries to the toy.)

I thought I would end this week’s section with another story. So settle down and get comfortable with a cup of happiness (whatever your beverage of choice may be). But first… I am pleased to report that I completed the planting of my vacant garden bed on Saturday. For 5 hours in driving rain I was out in my undies (well as near as) spreading soil, planting plants and loading mulch. I love being out in the rain and can share that my happiest days on a beach are when on it alone in the driving rain, and it was like a tropical storm on Saturday, warm and wet. The garden looks amazing – more than could be said of my appearance by the end of the project. The sense of achievement was wonderful and I immediately reflected upon the remaining jobs on my ‘to be completed’ list. “They will stay a list unless I plan them into my action schedule” I thought… so yes, I did just that.

Any hooo… Friday night was my youngest son’s Christmas Dance concert. He was in 3 dances and the concert was 4 hours of ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and theatre. Tiggy loves to dance and has done so since he was 3 and is the 2010 Peter Allen in the making. He danced his little heart out and loved every minute. This kid lights up like a Christmas Tree when he is on stage and dances through every moment off stage. His booty shake in the disco section brought the crowd to a roar. To my pleasure and surprise the event was extremely professional with amazing costumes and standards of consistency. I watched as group after group of varying ages and skill levels entered and exited the stage, dancing and prancing their hearts out. The energy and commitment to the message of the piece was something that grabbed me the most. These kids showed me that they ‘got’ that dance was telling a story, not counting the steps. I was moved to tears by the solo contemporary piece of a VCE student who achieved perfect scores in her exams and choreographed a story of war torn Germany from a child prisoner’s point of view.

I was caught up in the moment and the whole experience had my mind wander. I caught myself reflecting and questioning. If there was a ‘thing’, what will the ‘thing’ be that separates the group of kids from the dancer who goes on to be a star, from those who give up, shuffle for fun or teach others… Will there be a star? If there is, what makes the star? Is it the talent or the dedicated hard work or a mixture of the two?

I looked at the faces of those kids who were so obviously talented as they flew across the stage and took time to noticed their confidence. I wondered if the kids with less confidence had possibly more talent but were too shy to show it! Were there kids whose parents were ‘encouraging’ them to dance when maybe their heart was elsewhere?

As my mind meandered through all these endless questions I had an ‘ah ha’ moment. This stage with all of the children upon it of different sex, age, skill and level of commitment were a mirror of society. In this one concert, at this one dance school there was a micro community that reflected any sub set of the greater community. The aspirations of many were on display but the mindsets were hidden. Or were they! The kids were united under one vision: to dance, and yet how they applied themselves, what they took onboard or rejected from their training, how and if they rehearsed and who they were choosing to be as they performed was what separated them. Just like students at The Coaching Institute, athletes in a team, employees in a company… As a coach there was a business opportunity here to coach aspiring dancers to have the mindset of excellence. As a mother there was an opportunity to realise that Tig’s destiny is his to create, and his alone. As an individual there was an opportunity, to realise that every day is a gift and every decision shapes my destiny and time waits for no man, so get making decisions that align purpose with destiny. My destiny is mine to make. What about yours?

Happy Coaching and please keep the feedback coming so I know what you want to see more or less of in this newsletter (helentreloar@thecoachinginstitute.com.au)

P.S: When was the last time you dropped along to your local Coach & Connect? See this section of the newsletter for more information. There are some amazing people running these groups and the feedback from them has been extremely positive.

A Great day for 4 more bears…

I often get asked about my favorite thing with being part of the family here at The Coaching Institute and today I get to share with you exactly what it is… It’s about feeling like I am making a contribution to something bigger than me… making a difference on a grand scale….I guess its about really feeling like I’m part of something special – does that make sense?

Well today I get to share a small part of what that “special” is……

As part of The Coaching Institute Foundation we have underwritten the rescue of every mistreated Bear in Asia and today we got the brilliant news that we have saved 4 more bears in Vietnam!! This latest rescue was caught on camera for a documentary being released next year and highlights the appalling conditions these wonderful animals have to exist in..

The Good News Email..
Hi Sharon,

I was hoping to have some news to send through before Christmas, and here it is….four more bears rescued in VN yesterday. Sorry its been such a wait!

The film maker is from Sydney and he is working on a documentary which will be released next year so great timing that he was there to capture everything on film.

Best wishes,

Anne

Dear All,
>>
>> Yesterday (21/11), Kirsty, Tuan Bear W, Tuan B, Martin Guiness (Film
maker from Fox Studio) went to Soc Son Rescue Centre to rescue 2 adult moon bears and 2 moon bear cubs. The adult bears was a mercy rescue as one of the bear has a terrible skin condition (pls see pic) and Soc Son has requested our help in taking both bears (they’ve been together since cub). The 2 moon bear cubs were confiscated from Quang Ninh province on their way to China with Olive (Sun bear cub) few months ago and because of politics the cubs were transferred to Soc Son instead of us and since their arrival at Soc Son we’ve been providing Soc Son with special milk powder and guidance on how to look after them. They’re proximately 20kg and very cute!. We finally received clearance from Hanoi Municipal Govt for their release.

Choose to be a Champion !!!

On the weekend, Sharon’s Breakthrough to Business Success seminar became a moment in history. 140 people witnessed a young eagle stand up and spread its wings. To see its first flight was something to behold (or so they tell me), because as that eagle all I can talk to you about is how it felt.

You probably don’t remember the persistence it took you when learning to walk for the first time, but if you’ve ever witnessed a child learning to walk and the incredible persistence it takes to never give up, just imagine what they had to go through. The learning, the time it took to build up the muscles, the co-ordination and understand – Incredible persistence. Yet even faced with all of that, there was nothing but absolute certainty that resolute determination and persistence would continue until the task was achieved. Once achieved the next goal would be set and the child would learn to run and then the next goal would be set, again and again.

So as the child grew up in to an adult and their memories faded and their desire to persist waned, at what point did we no longer… choose conviction over doubt, choose life over waste and choose action over boredom.

So what kind of mindset are we born with that we don’t remember we have because it’s easier not to, remember Curiosity and Determination.

I wish to share with you the insight that freed my Core identity and changed my life, along with the mindset that made it happen.

Amongst the rich tapestry of business insights we were generously presented over the weekend, number one of these was to Add Value (a core belief of mine), and value was exactly what we got. So modelling Sharon in this was a given, every time I stood to address the room. And as sure as you are sitting there today reading this article, the law of reciprocity payed back tenfold – I was up until 4am the next morning just trying to process the immense volume of learnings I had gained that day.

What mindset does a child have, what mindset does a champion have and could they be the same? Your champion could be a Millionaire mindset or an Olympic athlete.

Write the word ‘Yes’ everywhere, it applies.

So are you going to:
Choose childlike curiosity… Or not?
Choose to persist…
Choose to learn…
Choose action…
Choose life…
Choose to be a… CHAMPION

Prescription from Doc

Take the Opportunity

I am not sure if you have heard yet but Shaz has been running a little seminar called Breakthrough to Business Success around the Country recently…

Well on the weekend just passed I became one of the 320 people that had attended this seductively secretive event. Now the hardest thing for me right now is to tell you about it because the weekend all revolves around THE GAME. Now like all participants from Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney I have been sworn to secrecy about the details but I can tell you its mind blowingly good! I guess the real question now is can we convince Shaz to run it again because this was always meant to be a 1 time gift for Diploma students!

The message though for today is about opportunity because on Sunday I was talking to a couple who only decided at the last minute to actually attend the event! They did not know Sharon and were not part of our community so went in to the weekend a little blind and with a “why not” attitude. Now here is the GREAT thing! They told me that the learning’s from the weekend will instantly transform their business bottom line and culture – I can’t tell you how, that would be giving away part of the game!

My question for you today after hearing this wonderful result is how do you look at new opportunities? How do you make decisions in moments of uncertainty? Do you do what you always did expecting new or different results or do you take new opportunities with the “what’s the worst thing that can happen” attitude? Do you look for a new angle or work the same one you’ve always worked? Do you take a calculated risk or play safe? Do you back yourself or doubt yourself?

Let me know your answers and tell me all about how you answer the door when opportunity knocks…

Keep making a difference,

Doc

Inspiration from hel

Here we are half way through November and only 6 weeks to Christmas (yay).

An amazing week has passed by at The Coaching Institute…

The BIG news of the week was that Sharon Pearson was runner up in the Telstra National Business Women’s Awards after winning the Victorian Finals. Sharon was thrilled to share the experience with her parents and close friends and being the runner up in the National Awards was a tremendous validation of her uncompromising business success. The outcome is testament to Sharon’s mindset and hard work. Her team at The Coaching Institute is proud to represent her world class training programs and to be part of her vision of serving others to develop and grow. As Sharon commonly will say, taking care of other people dreams automatically takes care of her own.

Alice Haemmerle delivered the first of her BONUS days of training to our Diploma students on “How to Create a Successful Business Coaching Program” last week. The students left the training room with quality HOW tools, that will allow them to build business coaching programs immediately that hook on to their Diploma coaching training. A fabulous day Alice, many thanks for your contribution to our quality Diploma program.
The final event in the “Breakthrough To Business Success” Tour was held in Melbourne over the weekend. O M G! Let me ask you this… When did you ever attend a business seminar that changed lives? Well that was the Breakthrough To Business Success seminar in bucket loads. To be part of a room of well over 100 people who were challenged to step outside of their current thinking and then observe the shift and transformation of individuals was a privilege and highly educational. Sharon’s unique and challenging programme gave us a firsthand experience of the many reasons why she is a stand out leader in the niche of Business Minderminds and she has the results to back it up. If you would like to hear from some of the participants, drop by the Success Stories page of our web site. I’d love to share loads of details about the event – but we have been sworn to secrecy! The Coaching Institute team all attended, and we, along with a number of fellow attendees, are pleading with Shaz to deliver the training again. We haven’t been successful with this plea… YET!

Joe Pane delivered his Two Day Extended DISC profile training here at The Coaching Institute. These trainings are intimate and in depth and perfect for the coach who is looking to add extreme value to their client’s sessions. It is also a ‘must have’ tool for executive and business coaches.
Well done DISCers – you were a delight, we celebrate your ongoing growth and professional development.

The theme for the team here at The Coaching Institute this week has been “triggers”. We set the challenge to bring to our conscious awareness any triggers of un-resourceful behaviour or patterns that move us away from the best outcome. For example: I shared with the team a pattern I used to run as a leader some years ago that created inconsistent outcomes.

I became aware that when the business I ran became predictable, smooth and stable I stirred things up by creating new products, projects and challenges so I could be useful and challenged. Now don’t get me wrong, this pattern has a resourceful place, however to have a business development program running around a CEO’s emotional patterns of behaviour triggered by boredom is not a recipe for success!

The trigger was the key… boredom. I discovered that my boredom was the certainty and staple diet of many of my employees. The systems were all working smoothly, we were on top of the work projects, we were meeting the needs of the customers, deliveries were on time if not early, we were organised and stream lined. My team would be calm and happy and would almost float around the office with a dazed glow of happiness. I would be restless, looking to poke the fire and get the coals working and looking to create new and exciting challenges.

For me the steps were something like this:

Step 1: Identify the un-resourceful behaviour
Step 2: Identify the trigger
Step 3: Bring the trigger to conscious awareness
Step 4: Change the step taken immediately after the trigger to be aligned with the end step / goal I desired

The change for me was that I recognised that boredom was an opportunity to improve the business. Boredom was aligned with a distinct lack of innovation, development and forward thinking happening in the business. The staff were busy doing the doing and not the creating. They were busy ticking the boxes. They were refining the current systems, products and services, to the limits of their thinking when they were designed. Projecting this forward, all this does is create a certain result that is finetuned, but limited to the original design. A little like carving a chair from a single piece of wood. The chair can be sanded, and painted and chiselled, but it remains a chair. What was needed was an ongoing development strategy for the business on every level; personal, professional, product, service… This one trigger and the exploration of its effects created profound change in the business I ran. I was able to see the need to have complex streams of development running simultaneously in the business. The growth and expansion of the business took off. The staff were given permission to handle multiple projects with confidence as their leader was living by example. The growth of the staff was explosive and the culture became even stronger as everyone was given variety, significance, certainty, uncertainty…. you know the rest.

So as we move to the end of the year and start to assess our achievements and outcomes, especially against goals we may have set, why not elevate your curiosity around any common outcomes you have experienced that have not been all you would have them be. Look for triggers that send you down a familiar path with a predictable outcome. If there was a road block at the start of that path, where would you have to go instead?

My final note is that of thanks to all of you who have made contact with me to give me feedback as to what you love about our newsletter. We load the newsletter with tips and information that adds value to your journey – if there is anything you would like to see more of – drop us a line.

Happy Coaching
