<$title$>Dear [fullname,fallback=Reader],
Already one month into the New Year! I have already stopped doing one New Year Resolution, and intend to get back into the swing of it today. I've also already achieved three goals I set for myself, which I'm really pleased with.
Setting goals is an important part of a success strategy. It gives us clarity about whether we are on track, and provides something to aim for when there's lots going on.
Without goals, we can stay in reaction mode - responding to whatever is going on - instead of proactively building momentum for our dreams.
With goals, we can have the sense of accomplishment that comes from persistence. Accomplishment leads to a feeling of wellbeing, which leads to us feeling happy! Ask many people and they say their goal is to "just be happy". Who knew it was as simple as taking action...
Warmest regards,

Sharon Pearson
CEO

Getting out of 'Stories' and into 'Action' (Cause v Effect)
What makes the difference between living a life of success and living a life of struggle? Our responses to the challenges life throws at us largely determines the success we will achieve.
When we are living at Cause we are taking responsibility for the results in our lives. At Effect we are choosing to let challenges effect our results and giving reasons, excuses and stories about why we can't get the results we want. When we are at Cause we are in a position to create more possibilities to get the results we want.
For example, we can blame our boss, partner, ex-partner, kids, workload etc for why we can't do something, and the extent to which we do this, diminishes our opportunity to create change and improve our circumstances.
When we take responsibility for our response, and don't externalise what's preventing the change we want, we move to cause.
Does this guarantee results? No.
Does it increase our odds? Yes!
The Easiest Way To Be A Great Leader
By Lisa Wiking, TCI Franchisee
How many times have you thought “I just wish I had a great team” or “I wish I could get the right people for my team”. How many times have you heard “You have to do this to be a great leader” or “You have to do that to be a great leader”? In society today, there is a belief that when you have a good team then you can be a great leader, or if you do certain things then you will be a great leader.
Actually, this is not where you begin. For how long do we have to keep trying it this way before we figure out that it’s just not the way it works. I’m sure you’ve heard the definition of Insanity: “Doing the same thing and expecting a different result”.
There is a simple equation that if you live by it, will transform not only your leadership skills also your life for ever. Before I show you what it is, let me show you what it’s not. HAVE + DO = BE.
Let me explain. The way society has trained us to think is, “When I have that productive team, then I can do the things that a productive team leader would do, then I will be a great leader.” We think it’s like this in all areas of our life. “When I have that lovely house, then I will do all the things I need to do to keep that lovely house and then I can be happy.”
So, let’s break down the equation: Having, is what we are trained to focus on, what we want, all the material things, or that healthy body or the goal that we have been working towards, until we get that goal, we can’t ‘be happy!’. When actually, the ‘having’ is the bi product or the end result of the equation. It’s the last thing that happens in the chain of events.
The ‘doing’ is the action required, this is an important step, because nothing happens without action. In leadership this is the ‘effective communication’ the ‘leading by example’, ‘setting clear expectations’ and ‘encouraging and supporting’ amongst many others. Without action there is no result.
The easiest way to describe the ‘being’, is that it’s ‘within us’. It’s the ‘emotional states’ we choose to experience, it’s ‘who we decide we are’, it’s ‘our thinking’, it’s ‘what we tell ourselves’, it’s ‘how we feel about ourselves’, it’s ‘what we focus on internally’ and it’s ‘what we choose to listen to and believe’. The major difference between ‘having’ and ‘being’ is that one is the goal and one is a state. We all know that a goal is something you have to focus on and work towards. A state is the opposite; a state is something you can have at any given moment if you choose.
For Example:
Think about the saddest moment in your life, and answer the following questions before moving onto the next one:
What happened?
Who was there?
What could you see?
How did you feel?
What were others saying to you?
What did you tell yourself in that moment?
How are you feeling, right now? Quite sad?
Ok, break state; have you ever seen a camel and a tortoise together?
Ok, now go back and do it with the happiest moment of your life, so think about the time you remember when you were most happy.
Now, how are you feeling, right now? Happier, I would imagine?
So that’s the beauty of the ‘being’ – you can have it right now. There’s no time delay, there’s no waiting, it’s simply a matter of you making the decision that ‘this is who I am going to be’.
So the key to this information is to understand the equation and the way that it works. The true equation works like this: BE + DO = HAVE.
When you know what qualities make a great leader and choose to be those qualities, then you can focus on doing the things that great leader would do, which means you will have the results that great leader would have.

DISC – What’s your Story
By Felicity Nuttall, TCI Franchisee
People’s behaviours tell us their story. If we watch and listen carefully we can learn to ‘read’ the story as it is being told. This skill allows us to see and know the intricate detail that individually defines each person. It’s through discovery of another’s story and listening to why, what and how they see their world that we begin to develop a true understanding of who they are and why they behave the way they do. It also conveys how they want us to interact with them.
Same species, different behaviour
As you think about your work colleagues, family or friends you may begin to notice that some are more comfortable dealing with facts and others are more influenced by feelings. Some are assertive and direct, while others tend to be more indirect and reserved, more active or passive, more extroverted or introverted.
On another level, people make decisions at a difference pace. For some, decisions are made in a split second while others prefer to work and make decisions more slowly. Some prefer to talk, others to listen.
Such telltale behaviours can be clearly identified and are readily observable. It means if we watch and listen we can better understand others and easily work out how to communicate in a way that our story or message will be heard, interpreted and understood. The secret ... use the same behavioural and communications preferences as those we are interacting with.
DISC – discovering behavioural types
A simple and effective way to choose the right behaviour is by using the DISC profile tool.
This behavioural analysis system was designed by psychologist Dr William Marden in the 1920s, and today is used by leading companies and businesses throughout the world. It has a proven track-record for delivering immediate results, especially in business and work environments where people join together to achieve a common goal.
The power of DISC is in its simplicity to use and understand. It is effective because it creates a platform for shared understanding of the four distinct behavioural styles shared by everyone.
DISC enables us to quickly assess and identify the common traits associated with each type and to more accurately know and predict how people behave. This understanding means everyone can quickly identify a behavioural type and communicate in a way that ensures they are clearly understood. Clear communication to create shared understanding is the key to great relationships and consistently achieving your goals.
For more information on DISC and how it can assist you or your business, contact Felicity Nuttall on 0430 184 599 or click to email.
