Dear [fullname,fallback=Reader],
The only antidote to fear is appreciation - it switches a part of our brain into a different gear (perhaps not technically accurate, but you get my drift) and allows us to see possibilities. Yet so many people stay stuck because of their fears.
The number one fear I come across is "I'm not enough". If we replace each moment of self-doubt or paralyzing fear with a deep breath of "I am loved," I wonder what would be different in our world?
I aim to walk my talk with this yet still get sucked into the comfort of self-doubt - because there I don't have to do anything, and I get to tell myself I'm safe. It's not true - I'm only safe from success, happiness and achievement.
Gratitude can be as simple as a daily reflection of who you love and who loves you. It can be a moments pause to thank someone or a big smile of appreciation. It can be a prayer or a meditation or a note to someone you care about. It can be in a touch, a song and a dance.
Crazy talk.
Warmest regards,

Sharon Pearson

It's in early days, and we are only just designing the committee appointments - however your involvement would be greatly appreciated and we would love ideas and input from all involved with The Coaching Institute.
Our first meeting will be in July, here in Melbourne at Head Office - if you haven't registered your interest yet then please email Lisa@thecoachinginstitute.com.au and let her know you'd like to come along to the first meeting.
Regular updates of The Coaching Institute Foundation will be provided in this newsletter until we create its own newsletter!

Coaching Corner: The Transfer of the “Bang”
One of the first things I remember at the beginning of my coaching journey was a learning of “who gets the bang.” I had experienced a number of coaching sessions as the client before I started as a coach, and each and every one of them had a light bulb moment or BFO (Blinding Flash of the Obvious). I was amazed at how much I learnt about myself in every coaching session. Each time, growing and learning something new about myself. It was amazing. When I made the choice to go ahead and begin coaching, I felt a little bewildered the first few times I coached, as I wasn’t getting the bang that I normally got. Until I realized that, the coaching sessions weren’t about me or what I got out of it, it was only about the client. The feedback I was receiving was, “Wow, that was amazing”. It took me a while to understand that it was the transfer of the bang, I now no longer received the bang, I now played a part in delivering it!
Effective Leaders Communicate Effectively
By Karina Hogan, TCI Franchisee
Leadership Coach & Trainer
It’s been said that quality of your life is determined by the quality of your communication with yourself and with others.
Everyone has a story or knows of a story about a disastrous trip to the hair dresser.
Have you ever returned from a trip to the hair dressers unhappy with the results of your visit? You walked in sat down, the hair dresser asked you what you wanted and your response was “oh I dunno something different”.
And the result of your communication was equal to the effectiveness of your communication!
Think back to the effectiveness of what you communicated to the hair dresser and the results you received. Were you actually thinking, shorter, different style, different color, I’m bored with the same cut, and or I really just wanted a little extra off the back. How much of what you were actually thinking did you relate to the hair dresser and how much were you expecting them to read your mind because “they’re the professional they should know what I want just by looking at me. I have been coming here now for at least 6 months”.
Is the way you relate to your hair dresser reflective of how you relate to yourself and others? Do you just expect others to pick up on your little innuendos and understand comprehensively what you are asking of them? Or is part of the issue that you don’t really understand yourself that well and know what you really want so you struggle to communicate that effectively to others?
A leader’s knowledge of self is key to communicating effectively.
What is effective communication and how do you measure its effectiveness?
Isn’t it by the result that you achieve? Leaders that achieve outstanding results have mastered the ability to know themselves and others, and have learned to ask themselves great questions.
3 Keys to more effective communication
Knowing and understand yourself is the first step.
In assisting clients to understand themselves better I use the simple yet powerful tool of DISC analysis which is a personality profiling technique. Profiling assists in learning to understand what makes us tick and how we can relate more effectively to others.
DISC is the universal language of behavior and emotions. It is the language of how we act. Behavioral characteristics can be grouped together into four quadrants, or styles. People with similar styles tend to exhibit specific types of behavior common to that style. Everything learned in the DISC language is totally observable.
How we like to be addressed, whether we like to work with people in a team, or by ourselves and with things. Whether we make decisions easily and decisively or whether we like to think about things for a while.
Each style also comes with archetype of strengths and stretches – The great thing about having awareness about your stretches is that you can then work on improving them. This leads us to key #2.
2. Get coached on your stretches
How valuable would it be to know that in your role of team leader (and if you have a dominate type profile (D) you have a tendency to want to just tell everyone what they have to do and you’re not open to positive feedback from the team on how things could be improved. One of the major reasons for high staff turnovers is poor leadership.
To quote Dwight Eisenhower “You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that's assault, not leadership.
Take elite athletes - most start off with some natural ability then receive outside assistance from a coach to build on their strengths and to highlight their stretches for the purpose of strengthening their techniques, or applying new techniques.
The effectiveness of how you navigate life can be directly linked back to how well you know and understand yourself. Because it’s when you know and understand yourself you can communicate more effectively with others. And when you can communicate more effectively with others your results have to change.
3. Learning the four styles so you can “speak the other person’s language”
Participants through the usage of DISC knowledge can become more effective communicators in their relationships at work with their team member, managers, clients, suppliers and in their personal lives.
DISC also brings a greater understanding of how others see us, and assists us to communicate more effectively with different type profiles. It’s a bit like languages. If you speak English and you’re colleague speaks French there is bound to be some barriers to communication. Imagine how your communication can be more effective when you can “speak” all four different languages.
And then take it to the next step; imagine how different your results will be as well.
Effective leaders learn to match the other person’s preferred style for more effective communication therefore improving their results.
“Leadership can be thought of as a capacity to define oneself to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future.”
- Edwin H Friedman
