Testimonials

"Dear Sharon, Joe, Connie & TCI Support Team,

A heartfelt “thank you” for a truly transformational 7 days! TCI’s NLP Practitioner training quite literally turned my life around. No doubt about it.

I’ve been pain-free since I completed the course. That’s following 18 years of ‘doing’ fibromyalgia. I even cured myself of restless leg syndrome. If faced with a health ‘challenge’, I just ask myself “how am I doing this?” and presto it’s gone.

Controlling my ‘state’, I discovered, isn’t limited to health. The weekend following our NLP training, I put in an awesome paddle at the Corporate Games - Outrigger Canoeing held at Docklands.

Thanks to the TCI team, I’m living purposefully and with passion, creating the world I really want. My map of the world has changed irrevocably.

Now to pass that gift along...

In light & love,"

"Coaching is a journey of passion, integrity, inspiration and dedication just to name a few. These values are extremely important to The Coaching Institute, its founder Sharon Pearson and her team who deliver nothing less than the values which they teach. John and I are both students with TCI and would not hesitate in recommending their training programs to anyone who is passionate about inspiring people through coaching to reach their full potential. “I have 18 paying clients, my own coaching offices and I’m absolutely delighted with everything I experienced at The Coaching Institute. They have supported me, offered guidance at every step and delivered far more than I expected. Thank you TCI!”

<$title$> Hello [fullname,fallback=Reader],

We have been flooded with success stories in the past few weeks – the approaching New Year is bringing out the best in people! We are delighted for our students and for the clients they are assisting. As we move into 2009 we are improving our programs here at The Coaching Institute more, and have already identified 12 ways we can do things better. I think if we’re not improving, we’re slipping!

If we can ask ourselves questions designed to achieve small improvements over time, we’re going to feel pretty good about ourselves in 12 months time. Thinking about our ideal self, the self we believe we are capable of being, is worth 10 minutes of our time. Acting to bring it into reality is the next step. Keeping going, even in the face of setbacks or challenges, is how we become our ideal selves.

Each of us is ultimately responsible for who we choose to be in each moment. Extraordinary moments occur when we commit to being our ideal selves right now. If we’re proud of who we are, how we act, how we treat others and how we respond to challenges we are going to build the life we deserve and want.

I believe the New Year is our opportunity to recommit to being the best version of ourselves we can be. No one can make us change, tell us how to live or get us to commit, because the only commitment needed is the commitment to ourselves. And that’s what we can do right now.

Warmest regards,

Sharon

Ask the Coach

Q:I am feeling a real lack of energy, really quite lethargic. I have so much going on at the moment and so many people counting on me. It is not a great time to be feeling this way. What should I do?
- Jessica, Cairns

A: Lack of energy is a very clever strategy your unconscious mind may use to sabotage, resist, to keep you safe or to gather evidence for limiting beliefs that you already hold about yourself.  To move unconscious behavior into conscious awareness is a very effective way of being more at cause in your life and creating your results through choice and response rather than automatically reacting. If lack of energy is an unconscious strategy that your brain is activating as a reaction to current events there must be beliefs or fears driving that response.

Illicit your strategy by asking yourself, How do I “do” lack of energy? When is it a good time to “do” lack of energy? What triggers “doing” lack of energy?

How our beliefs make a difference

The imprint period, is the stage in a human beings life where we are aged 0-7. During this time we make many decisions about what we can and cannot do, who we are, our values and beliefs about ourselves and life. Events, which occur during this time, will have a major impact on the beliefs which are established. Something will happen; a young person will add meaning to that event or create a story around it and then carry that forward as a belief about themselves.

When I was two years old, I lost my favourite teddy Whitey at the shopping centre. I was devastated and made that mean that I was incapable of looking after things, it was scary to love something too much and life was very unpredictable and unfair. These beliefs were carried forward, and my life was spent gathering evidence for those beliefs and finding ways to compensate for the lack, which I saw within myself at that time.

Mostly these beliefs exist on an unconscious level, forming our identity and creating boundaries. Once these beliefs are established you are unlikely to operate outside of these beliefs through fear of not belonging, not being loved or not being good enough. Your unconscious mind activates strategies, which gather evidence for these beliefs or compensate for these beliefs in order to keep you safe.

What are compensating characteristics?

Compensating characteristics are ways of being that you use in times where you feel unprotected, out of control or there is uncertainty. If you have had the belief since imprint period that you are stupid then a compensating characteristic you may have created out of your fear of not being loved because of that lack, may be to try really hard academically. This compensating characteristic seems to work really well. It keeps you safe, you get to prove yourself and nobody knows the truth about who you really are underneath, however it is very unresourceful.

Every time you do the compensating characteristic it just seems to reiterate the initial feeling of lack. So, even though trying really hard academically feels good for a while, you fear deep down that if you didn’t run yourself into the ground trying to prove yourself, you would fail, people would be disappointed and that reiterates the feeling of not being good enough, which the compensating characteristic was borne from in the first place. Lack of energy can mean you do not get done what you think you should have and therefore leave you feeling a failure yet again.

How can beliefs and compensating characteristics affect my results?

Consider whether your current workload is linked to your purpose or are you being a “human doing” and “do do do doing” to rescue others, to prove yourself or to be the martyr? Ask yourself what is driving you to take on these tasks? Have you piled things on yourself to prove to yourself that you cannot do this? Is taking on all of these things your way of having others need and like you? Are these things necessary in achieving your goal and your lack of energy is a way of resisting moving forward because of fear?

By considering your motivators and beliefs which are behind strategies, actions and decisions that you make you can start to make things work for you. Sit down with a pen and paper and start to explore your beliefs about yourself. Ask yourself these questions and write down the answers:

What am I making it mean about me when I have loss of energy?
What am I scared will happen if I do not manage to get everything done?
What is the impact on me of having created such a heavy workload?
For what purpose have I created this workload? What does it give me?
What do I get to say to myself when I get all of this done?
What do I get to say to yourself if you cannot get it all done?
What do I believe about time?
What unresourceful behavior do you need to let go of right now?
Who are you really and what way of being would you like to start embracing?
What can I do to create change right now?

Pretending to be busy is a trap that some people fall into. Cut out any tasks which won’t have a direct impact on the result that you are committed to achieving right now. Focus on what you want and take actions toward it. Look at your time management and ask yourself if you are giving time to the areas of life that are most important to you.

This is also a great time to think about your health. Are you eating foods which support a good energy flow? Are you drinking an amount of water each day which will nourish you and sustain the days activities. The brain is like any other muscle, it needs protein every three hours. Just as a car cannot run without fuel, you need to feed your body. How are your sleep patterns? Are you honoring yourself by incorporating some alone time, maybe some meditation into your weekly routine?

Through a healthy mind, body, spirit connection you can achieve great energy levels. What is your body currently telling you through lethargy? Maybe you are resisting something, scared of moving forward or trying to be some way, which is innately incongruent with who you really are? Speak you truth, if only to yourself and let go of what is not working. Your life is your greatest gift, what would you like to experience today? Live it!! Accept yourself, free yourself of your limiting beliefs and your compensating characteristics will become redundant. Now, enjoy just being!!

3 WAYS TO GUARANTEE YOU’RE REMEMBERED

With coaches, consultants and specialists covering new areas of the market everyday, how can you guarantee that you’re remembered?

Having a strong brand identity can make the difference in obtaining new and loyal client relationships, having the ability to be viewed with an accurate perception and even effect the result of a purchase, it can communicate ‘expert’ or scream ‘start-up’. What is your brand saying about you?
We’ve explored 3 ways to cut though the crowds and get people to see, hear and think about your brand, to assist you in guaranteeing that you’re remembered!

1. Know your brand and what makes it unique.

Your brand is the perception and relationship that people carry in their minds about your business and the link between your business and your clients values. People remember and associate with brands that they feel deliver on their promises and offer a point of difference, for example, we unconsciously and often consciously purchase products because we like and trust them, before considering looking for an alternative product or service. Knowing this means, that if your brand reflects your clients values, they are likely to be loyal customers. If it does not, chances are you are going to lose them to someone else, your competition! Knowing your brand, your client’s values and what is unique about your business in comparison to other businesses in your market will have you remembered!

2. Make an accurate first impression

People make up their mind about you and your brand in approximately 7 seconds, so first impressions count! Clients and potential clients create their perception of you based on the visual and linguistic information that you’re giving them, so to give yourself the best opportunity to convey your brand and your business with accuracy, give the client the information that they need to perceive your business the way that you want it. Ways to ensure you’re making an accurate first impression include dressing for the occasion, this means calibrating the client and the environment from the get-go, look professional and include a detail that reflects your brand, if you’re not sure what outfits would reflecting or enhance your brand, get brand or style coach. Offer something to remember your business by on hand (whether it be a business card or DVD on your business, brochure or promotional product relevant to your business). And the most important, and often forgotten, is to wear a smile! A smile is guaranteed to assist in getting your brand across accurately by assisting you to communicate with the certainty, confidence and clarity needed to create a strong, friendly and accurate first impression!

3. Follow up

Following up is a great way to give your customers another experience of your business and your brand. Anyone can follow up, what is it that will have your business and your brand remembered? We recommend following up with a purpose, not just because its appropriate etiquette, offer value to the potential client / business relationship, make it about them! By letting them know that you have genuine interest in them and not just in creating a new client or a sale, this means that they are likely to develop an interest it YOU.  Sir Richard Branson details that ‘reputation is everything’. Build a strong reputation for being a leader in following up, this can be achieved by being timely, adding value, sharing knowledge, giving a gift that reflects your brand, or simply posting a hand written note. It’s often the simplest following up that can have that largest impact. Take note of the feedback you’re receiving, and set up a system based on what get the most positive feedback, so that it’s easy to give this gift to even more clients, which is strengthening your brand and its reputation and guaranteeing that you’re remembered!

Brand name – what is that??

By Julie Hyde

When I was reading the great book by Anthony Robbins, Awaken the Giant within, he asked an awesome question. If there was a meaning in the dictionary about you, what would you want it to read? This really resonated with me as it is something I have been passionate about for a long time. Brand name!

When I was leading a large team of managers at NAB, I would talk to them passionately about my brand and the importance of knowing theirs. I assisted them to develop their own brand, ensuring they put the actions in place to support the brand they were trying to portray to their teams and to their clients.

So what is brand name? I’ve spoken with many people about it, some get it, some don’t. We all know brand in terms of business. The renowned Virgin brand, developed by Richard Branson, Telstra, Apple, Moran furniture. These brands have been developed and stand for something in their own right. If we look at Virgin, you may think of innovative, fresh, dynamic and the airline!  So what about the brand of us as individuals? As Virgin is a big brand, with massive signage, aircraft and now telecommunications, we are the walking talking billboard for our own brand. Take Richard Branson for example – he is an entrepreneurial brand all of his own.

So what is it that you stand for?

Let me share a story of the power of a strong and dynamic brand name. There was a girl I used to work with. Sarah was loads of fun, bubbly, funny and in for a great time all the time! She was very good at her work and had lots of experience in her field. Sarah loved to go out, have a great time, joke laugh and she loved a drink. Perhaps drunk a little too much at times. Everyone loved her and relied on her to be “fun”. Sarah decided she wanted to progress at work and change her life a little, choosing to focus on health. She was very motivated by her decision and started to put steps in place to help her achieve her goals. This included taking a more serious approach at work and not partying so much. Sarah started to communicate her new decisions and was a little surprised at the reaction. People weren’t taking her seriously, her boss especially, and her friends were teasing her that she had lost her “fun”. It took a lot of soul searching for Sarah to understand why this was happening. She had the reputation, or the brand name, of fun. This served her to a point, now it was not serving her. She had some work to do. She did not want to be identified simply as fun anymore.

Over time, Sarah developed a new brand name for herself at work– professional, honest, inspirational and dynamic. She put behaviors in place to support her brand. Sarah lived and breathed her brand and eventually, through hard work and determination, achieved her goal. She became a respected leader and achieved a new level of fitness. She gained a reputation for being dynamic and professional at work. Her Brand was out there! People were talking and success was following.

Brand is closely linked to values. It determines your reputation and what others say about you. Brand can either make or break you achieving your goals, building your networks, inspiring a team of people and empowering them to work for you. Brand name is so powerful and with a strong brand you can achieve limitless possibility.

So, I’ll ask again – what is it that you stand for? What is important to you? Ask yourself the question. What do you want people to say about you? What do you want your dictionary meaning to be? Write down the answers and develop your brand.  Make it empowering and something that motivates you. Does it get your blood pumping when you say, My brand is …? The second part of this is to establish what the behaviors are that will support your brand. You may need to eliminate some current behaviors and include some new ones. The third part, start doing it. Live and breathe your brand and act your brand. Notice the results you start getting, push through any challenges you face. You’ll be amazed what can happen!

Coaching Corner with Lisa Wiking:

Considering your brand name is something that can truly empower you and help you in understanding the direction of your life. One of the ways a coach can help their clients discover their own brand name is by conducting a values elicitation. Values are the ‘emotional states’ we want to feel on a regular basis. For example love, passion, happiness, security, contribution or significance. There a more than 3000 ‘states’ to choose from and they are the driving force behind all human behavior. If you want to change what you do then changing what you value will give you the most rapid and significant change. Imagine the client is talking about their life as a whole and is wanting to discover their core values. A coach would do this by asking the client, ‘what is most important to you in the context of your life?’ As the client begins to state what is ‘most’ important to them, the coach would continue to ask ‘what else’, ‘what else’. Until the client has expressed everything they can think of. The coach would then ask again ‘what else’.  Until there is between 10 and 20 different ‘states’ written on the page. Asking the client what else helps to stretch the clients ‘boundary conditions of their thinking’ and gives them a greater understanding of what is important to them at a deeper level.

As a coach, coaching a client on their values is the deepest level you can coach, and will give their clients the greatest transformation.
