I still remember the day I realised I could choose Coaching as a profession, I had been skirting around it for so long I knew there was something there I just couldn't put my finger on it....yet.
I had just given birth to my second son and I was on a slippery slope. I thought having children would make me happy and content and I was supposed to be living the dream with my husband succeeding in his career and me being a Mum. Surprisingly (for me having worked in Early Childhood Education for 10 years) it did not fulfill me and I spent too much time wondering why my kids and husband and life weren't making me happy. I instinctively knew if I didn't do something about my mindset I would get in deeper and deeper to a place I did not want to be and when I realised that I was 100% responsible for my own happiness things really started to shift.
Since high school I have coached sporting teams, I love not only the tactics, emotion and drama of sport but being part of an individual's and team's growth. What felt like out of the blue I was approached to coach the Under 23 Australian Women's team in 2010. It was after this experience and the progress made in my personal life that I knew I wanted to be a Coach and everything that went with it. Enter TCI! As soon as I enrolled and attended the Foundations weekend I knew I had made the right choice. The philosophies, the workshops, the staff, all worked together to create a learning path that inspired me and pushed me to strive for more.
Because of the learnings and experiences gained through TCI, I applied for the position of Head Coach for the Australian World Games Ultimate Frisbee Team. World Games is a multi-sport event endorsed by the Olympic Committee for sports not yet in the Olympics. It is held every 4 years and 2013 was held in Cali Colombia. Without the knowledge gained and experiences of NLP I would not have considered applying.
Today, that campaign is complete. We won a Silver Medal, an incredible result for us. I used NLP Anchors and Triggers with the team and individual players, I incorporated Mental Imagery and Mental preparation into our training and pre game warm up, I changed language patterns and worked hard to be the coach that each individual player needed. The players, before every game, were Mentally and Physically prepared. Something that I know made a huge difference to our results. The experience of this campaign and the privilege of feeling such joy, stress, tension, sadness and pride as well as my own learnings and development, is something I am truly grateful to The Coaching Institute for.
The plan for my business, Walker Coaching, is to continue working with Athlete's. I am also creating a niche working with Pre and Post Natal Women, working on coping strategies, dealing with anxiety and depression. I am passionate about helping women be at their best and meet the joys and challenges of Motherhood head on.
I am excited for what is to come!!
