It began for me this year when I enrolled in the certificate IV at The Coaching Institute looking to improve and grow my leadership capacity. I began listening to the CD’s and reading through the manual, learning an incredible amount of great stuff. In March I attended my intake weekend and things continued to take shape as I was challenged, developed and inspired in life coaching, leadership and success principles. I came back from that weekend changed, inspired and encouraged in my journey as a leader. I am currently working full time as a pastor in a local community church, leading a staff of 12, and a volunteer base of 80 leaders, serving the NSW Police Force as a chaplain and a chaplain in my local soccer club.
I have been unofficially coaching people in many forms and environments, running leadership training, team building workshops and individual mentoring and leadership development. As I journey further into the life coaching field, I am more and more excited about pursuing this at a deeper level, now with the tools and training to do this outstandingly well. I am growing and developing at a rapid rate as I learn and discover more life coaching and now NLP through the Coaching Institute, which has been an amazing journey so far.
I was having lunch with my 16 year old daughter after the intake weekend and sharing some of the success principles I had been learning like: cause and effect, the map is not the territory and what you focus on is what you get. She loved them and was excited by her learning and said how amazing it would be for her friends to get a hold of these principles for successful living too.
That’s how it started. I developed a 5 session program, going through some of the success principles, and making the language and stories relevant to their age group. We promoted it through my daughters friends, and her under 18s women’s soccer team which I also coach, and had developed good rapport with the girls.
We have now run the first two sessions and had 15 young people come along and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, a hot chocolate, lollies and input from me. The response has been amazing. The young people are loving the learning and already experiencing positive changes in their lives. One young 17 year old girl spoke with her high school counsellor about the first session and how it had impacted her life. The school counsellor then called me and asked me about the program and if she could recommend it to other young people she is seeing at the high school.
Another one of the participants, a 16 year old male said this to me after the second session, “this stuff is cool and I can see that my thinking is radically changing for the better already“. I have also had parents comment to me on the positive changes they are seeing in their children. Exciting times.
Empowering young people to design and create a better future is such a unique privilege. I wish I had have learnt this stuff 20 years ago too, and so I am committed to imparting all I can to the young people who cross my path. Thanks to TCI and all the learning, inspirations and challenges so far, and for all that is ahead.
I have started a business called “LifePlus Coaching” and I am running the SHIFT program under that banner. My goal is to continue on the journey of life coaching and use these skills in the things I already am doing, whilst developing the LifePlus Coaching business alongside. Will be very interesting where all this leads in the future and I am excited and expectant about what is ahead for me.
