How to pivot online in 2020: The three keys

Everyone is telling businesses they need to pivot now to succeed. Here's the answer to what that actually means in the real world.

How to pivot online in 2020 is one of the questions I'm getting asked so much by business owners and professional coaches. In fact, I've heard it so many times I turned to Google to search for an answer and find what advice is out there for the curious action taker.

According to US business magazine Forbes, the first thing you should do is don't think about selling online. Think about servicing your existing clients. Hmm. Really?

The second thing is to use social media. Yes, I know I'm supposed to do that, but how will that actually help get me leads, get clients, get results?

And the third thing on that list was get a stack of tech. Get Zoom (like the whole world, you probably already have.) Get your website in order. Get Shopify.

While that's all good guidance, it's all obvious—and what was missing for me, if I'm a business owner, is advice that give me actionable, specific and strategic steps to get those leads, clients, results.

They're all totally possible right now when online opportunities are huge.

It got me thinking even more about how to pivot online in 2020. I think one of the most common mistakes people make is that they don't really get what it means.

They focus on the online and they forget about the pivot.

People think pivoting online is just getting online. As long as they have social media, as long as they have their tech, they think somehow business will just happen. And that's not how it goes.

Because the key word here is pivoting.

Pivoting is about doing your business differently, and thinking about opportunity where it didn't exist before. It's bringing creative and inductive thinking to how you operate.

There's three critical components to knowing how to pivot online in 2020.

The first part is your competitive strategy.

There's five key questions you ask to determine and drill down to what it is that makes you different to everybody else out there. To what is is that makes your market want to do business with you and only you.

The second critical component in pivoting online successfully is your product strategy.

And I don't mean just figuring out logistically how to replicate online what you're doing offline. The majority of the time that doesn't work. If you're reading this, you might already know that!

I admit it's not as simple as it sounds, because your product strategy isn't about solving the limitations that COVID-19 is placing on your business so far this year.

Your pivot product strategy is about looking at the advantages that being online gives you, and the entirely new market is opens up for you.

There's three specific game changing advantages to tap into and make work for you. If you'd love to workshop them together, let's make it happen at 'How To Pivot Your Business Online in 2020'.
