Are You Holding Back? 5 Simple Ways to Get off the Fence Now

Ever get this feeling of holding back?

There’s more to life than this.

That it could be heaps better, only if you knew how?

Perhaps you already have ideas about where you could take your life or who you could be.

Maybe you want to fly half way across the world and learn another language from the locals.

Or you want to travel the world, set base at Mount Everest basecamp, snorkel in Hawaii.

Maybe you want to build a new career utilising the potential you know you have.

Or perhaps you want to take risks, go on adventures you will never forget.

Whatever it is for you, chances are you already know what’s holding you back.

The challenge is taking that idea, that goal, and transforming it into reality.

And here’s the thing: the answer usually lies within us.

How to Get off the Fence in 5 Simple Ways

DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE

Decide Where You Want To Be

Based on the E.S.I.P Thinking Model (adopted from the Meta Dynamics™ coaching methodology), there are four dimensions of human behaviour.

The “E”, which stands for Environment, is where it all starts. The outcome we want to achieve; the purpose of the outcome; the thinking; the mindset; the standards and the attitude we need to bring to achieve the outcome.

You always start with the bigger picture – the “why”. Before you begin taking the steps, the step that comes before implementation is deciding where you want to be, and why.

Your answer doesn’t need to be specific. In fact, the higher chunked up you are, the better.

Some great questions to ask are:

Why does this matter?
- Where do I want to go?
- How will achieving this outcome make me feel?
- What’s my end result from this?

Be absolutely clear about what you want, such as a better work/life balance, more time with family, more independence or fulfilment.

Take your time, there’s no rush. Think about what you want, and why you want it. Asking “why” helps you identify hidden and deeper reasons underneath your wants.

MAKE AMAZING MISTAKES

Make Amazing Mistakes

Here’s an interesting thing about mistakes: If you are making them, it means you are actually doing something. It means that you are learning, experiencing things, and making progress.

Failure isn’t the problem – but it can be the key to success. Success takes time, it takes learning, it takes trial and error, and it takes determination.

None of these things happen unless some failure thrown in the mixture.

The real mistake? It’s when you give up, quit trying and lose sight of your potential.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE

Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People

If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”

As you move along, blazing your own outrageous path, you’ll meet others who are on a similar journey.

You’ll find that a lot of them are great at talking the talk – but when you look closer, you’ll find that very few are actually doing what it takes. Most care when things are easy, only a few stick through till the end.

Build friendships and network with people who walk their talk, stick through when things get tough, and are smarter than you.

Hang out with people who are chasing their dreams and doing the “do”.

Simply by being around them, you can use the challenge as a forward throttle and move ahead on your own path.

Mingle with people who inspire you to be better, not to simply do better.

Remember to stay true to yourself, and who you want to be.

There may be times where you have to choose between a goal, maybe a big salary, and your values, such as maintaining your work/life balance.

There is nothing wrong with either choice, just be sure to consider how it will impact you and the person you want to be.

GET OUT THERE AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Get out There and Learn Something New

Just as with making mistakes, go out and grow your mind.

Discover new things and realise how much bigger the world is than you thought it was yesterday.

Consider where you want to go, and what your goals are.

What do you need to learn to help get you there? Need to retrain for new career opportunities? Want to brush up on your painting skills, or relearn the piano?

Go! Do it.

Focus on what you want to be amazing at. Practice and master it. But don’t forget to keep a broad mind as you learn.

It’s so easy to get caught up in your own world, your own little bubble, that you don’t notice everything going on around you.

Continue to learn, keep challenging yourself, and build up momentum in doing so. You will start seeing the results very soon.

DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE

Do Something for Someone Else

Helping others is a great way to gain some perspective and shift the focus away from ourselves.

There are so many opportunities to do this to. From helping out at charities, volunteering in the community, and even simple acts of paying it forward.

Helping others is a powerful way to learn about yourself, make new friends, meet new people and simply leave a positive footprint in the world.

Helping out in the community and volunteering may not directly align with your specific goals, but it does help build you as a person and broaden your perspective. It can be a pillar in your strategy of getting back on track.

As you spend time helping others building their lives as they get themselves to where they want to go, it will help you in your own journey.

This all requires effort, and it needs your attention and determination. Don’t let that stop you and hold you back.

Getting out of your own way to let yourself go forward is the best possible thing that you can do.

Set yourself up on the right trajectory, get rolling and use that momentum to carry you.

There will be bumps along the way, but don’t let that deter you.

You’ve got all the tools to get started and bring about a change, right now, should you decide to.

So go. It’s your time to take action and get off the fence.

Life’s far too interesting outside the box – start to live outrageously and break the rut.
