Based on the E.S.I.P Thinking Model (adopted from the Meta Dynamics™ coaching methodology), there are four dimensions of human behaviour.
The “E”, which stands for Environment, is where it all starts. The outcome we want to achieve; the purpose of the outcome; the thinking; the mindset; the standards and the attitude we need to bring to achieve the outcome.
You always start with the bigger picture – the “why”. Before you begin taking the steps, the step that comes before implementation is deciding where you want to be, and why.
Your answer doesn’t need to be specific. In fact, the higher chunked up you are, the better.
Some great questions to ask are:
- Why does this matter?
- Where do I want to go?
- How will achieving this outcome make me feel?
- What’s my end result from this?
Be absolutely clear about what you want, such as a better work/life balance, more time with family, more independence or fulfilment.
Take your time, there’s no rush. Think about what you want, and why you want it. Asking “why” helps you identify hidden and deeper reasons underneath your wants.
