There was LOTS of buzz when The Secret was released... people still talk about it... and the question I get asked most often is “Can this really work without taking action?”
I’m a big believer that much of the success we experience is due to our taking action. It’s a needed, vital ingredient to success. But before this, before anything can happen, we must first have the thought.
Our thoughts determine our focus. Our focus determines our reality. Our reality determines what we believe is available to us. Our “options” turn into actions or non-actions.
Actions are the last, vital step. Without them, we’re just thinking.
I overheard someone say to someone else last week, “I’m not interested in your opinions. I’m only interested in your decisions.” I love that! All the thinking in the world means little if it isn’t harnessed to the action.
It’s easy to have opinions about how we want our lives to be. I meet people who say “If I only had the time I would really, absolutely do that!” They never quite seem to have the time, though.
Don’t confuse your thoughts with what you’re going to be attracting into your life. There’s a step in there that The Secret didn’t talk about, and I call it the Secret Step Number 4: Do the thing.

Q:
I am currently a stay at home mum with two children aged 3 and 1. I have been studying part time at uni since my first son was born in 2005 and still have a long way to go before I finish my degree. I am in a bit of a quandary as I feel that I should be going back to work rather than draining what little resources we have on furthering my education, although it will benefit us all in the long run when I get a better paid job once I go back to work full time. I also feel torn between putting my kids into care and either working or studying or both when I think it is important to stay at home with them as long as I can as everything I feel and read and hear says this will benefit them in the long run (especially as they are both boys and apparently they can suffer more from separation anxiety than girls). I want to do the best I can for my boys but also feel it is time I did something for myself. I always knew my degree would be a long term thing but now it seems going back to work is more important so I can feel I am contributing to the family income. I guess I want a bit of everything! Is there any advice you can give me on what my priorities should be and how I can get the best out of my situation?
A:
Our values system is very influential in decision making and the reason why you are feeling torn right now is because the things that you value are conflicting against each other. For example, you may value financial security, learning and family quite equally and it seems you cannot honor all of those values at the same time. Write down what is most important to you in life. Then take a look, are the things that are most important to you congruent with the results that you are currently getting? If not, reevaluate how you can balance the things that are most important to you. You may need to let go of something- like a belief that is limiting you from having it all. For example, you may have to let go of a belief that says, ‘You cannot be both a successful mother and career woman.’
I am sure you are a very committed mother. Remember to acknowledge yourself for being a great mother and always doing the best that you can with the resources that you have available to you at the time. Nothing has meaning but the meaning that we give it. What meaning are you adding to aspects of your current situation? Our reality is created by our beliefs, perception and focus. We filter in information and filter out information to gather evidence for what we already believe to be true. What are you filtering out that if you were to filter back in right now would make all the difference? How are your own beliefs limiting you right now, rather than empowering your forward?
All children are different. Just as it is very important to honor the individual needs of each child it is of utmost importance to honor your own needs as you cannot give away what you do not have. What would be the perfect balance for you? If this situation were just the way that you want it to be how would it be? Instead of just looking at the potential problems with your ideal situation, ask yourself- 'How will it benefit the boys for me to have some time just for me?' and 'What value would the boys get from attending day care?' Focus on what you want and take actions toward it and remember, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway!’

I reflected on the above questions myself, and as I did, there were four elements of my ACTIONS as a coach, that I sincerely wanted to share with you...elements that have propelled me into securing 6 paying clients & 5 pro bono’s in less than 3 months from my intake.
I trust you’ll enjoy the “aha” moment/s that come up for you.
CRAZED & EXCITED?
Do you get that it’s not your current state of “perceived action or inaction” that reflects your true potential? Instead it’s more a mirror of the size and quality of the goals you’re choosing to focusing on. So, yes, what I’m saying is this…to be compelled to take action, it takes more than just having a goal…it takes creating a goal that inspires you, that when you do set it, at first seems impossible, and at the same time gives you a sense of crazed excitement as you imagine the possibility of achieving it.
So, have a think about where action is lacking in your life. What is your enormous, spine tingling goal behind this action? Who or what is your truly authentic inspiration behind the action? If the answer to these questions is, “I don’t know”…FANTASTIC!!! You have some mystical magic to uncover here…go ahead, uncover the answers to these questions, and see what action comes up for you.
Now, I can hear some of you saying…”hey, I have some awesome remarkable goals set for myself!”…some of you, like me, probably even have them in bright thick marker on a large piece of paper next to your bathroom mirror, maybe over the sink in the kitchen, or even on the dashboard of your car…and still, you feel compelled to announce to yourself, and everyone or anyone else that you’re a “procrastinator”…
IF I SAY IT…IT IS SO!
I’m going to keep this one brief because we used to do it; before we decided to be masterful coaches, and our clients probably bring this “strategy” to the table a lot…it’s this;
Instead of focusing on how you procrastinate, consider the action you’ve actually taken to come to the conclusion that you have been procrastinating…
AND, in the now (because now is an never ending moment of now!), you are taking action, and that action, to be more specific, is taking the time to become aware that you aren’t a procrastinator, you were simply “doing procrastination” so that you had an excuse not to face your fear…
ARE YOU PLAYING TO WIN OR PLAYING TO…LEARN?
Yep, you’ve heard it before…and we hear it every day in our clients…fear of failure/losing, fear of not being good enough, a fear of looking bad or not looking good and/or a fear of not being loved.
You know, since enrolling with TCI, and investing a significant amount of my time reading about some of the most successful people from around the world, and even more inspiring, those courageous & creative Australian men and women entrepreneurs, there has been a consistently persistent message that each one of them, whether millionaires, billionaires, or the local Mum who developed a program for homeless children for absolutely no financial gain, and it’s this…the simple act of “not achieving their desired result” (notice I didn’t use the word failure here…because there is no such thing as fear, there’s only feedback), actually drew them closer to their life’s true inspiration…and ultimately, they came to realize a result that was far more rewarding and fulfilling than what they were initially aiming for. So, if you were to be courageous and model the mentors and leaders of our profession, by facing the fear and do it anyway, who do you need to be, to ensure that you move forward in both the good & challenging times? I think it’s about being…
CONSISTENTLY PERSISTENT
Have a go at persistently f*&%ing up! (I bet you’re all imaging Sharon as you read that statement…I don’t know why though?! LOL!) That is, taking action on the action that you committed to yesterday, which derived from the action you took last week, which came about because of the action you took last year. Consistently persist at courageously seeing what comes up for you when you take action and more importantly, see what comes up for your clients while you strengthen that “feel the fear and do it anyway” muscle…it’s awesome!
So, which element contains the biggest opportunity for growth for you? Coaching Corner – With Lisa Wiking
As I remember back to the beginning of my coaching journey, I remember very quickly becoming acquainted with my fear of not being good enough, and fear of failure.
As time progressed, I became more and more paralysed, almost like a deer looking into headlights, as I become more and more fearful. I resigned from my full time employment, to build my business, yet the ‘fear’ had such a hold on me, I felt I couldn’t act.
As time progressed, I became more and more accountable to my partner, as I wasn’t bringing in an income! His faith in me, was unquestionable, the problem was my faith in me.
Eventually the time came, when I felt letting him down was more painful than the idea of the perceived ‘fear’ of acting. So I did, I acted.
It probably won’t go down in history as the most ‘graceful’ of actions, the point is I did it…
In the face of fear, I acted. Throughout the first year, this happened almost on a daily basis, as I was growing outside of my comfort zone, at a rapid rate. The more I acted in the face of fear, the more the results improved, as I was getting better at finding the outcome I was looking for.
What I know now, that has completely changed my life for the better, is that when I feel that feeling of Fear, with Action, I know that the feeling of Elation is soon to follow!
So the equation to remember is FEAR + ACTION = ELATION!!!

Dear Coach-to-be,
Most life coaching training organisations teach you how to become a great coach but a mediocre marketer of your business which ultimately leaves you trading your time for money.
This is how I was trained too, and I spent 18 months trying to build up my client list one client at a time. And every time a client left I had to focus on finding the next client, and then the next...

The Journey So Far...* I did the intake on the last weekend of May 08 and upgraded to Diploma...* Set up my executive coaching business in June...* Started networking and established my website and business cards in July...* And best of all...* In August, my first month of coaching paying clients, I have invoiced $5000 - the cost of my Cert IV at TCI earned back in one month* AND - there are still nine days left in the month.... My goal is to be earning the equivalent of my Diploma fees every month by Christmas...
