What Every Coach Needs To Know Before They Do a Single Coaching Session!
I’ve heard hundreds of coaching sessions and after doing this for nearly 8 years I know exactly why some of those sessions rock, and others sink in the graveyard of the ordinary...
Too many Coaches don’t know the Number One Secret to Easy Success as a Coach, (otherwise known as The Golden Rule) or if they do know it, for some reason they disregard it.
Mystery to me.
Anyways, here it is, so you can save yourself hundreds of hours of practice and skip the whole “my client didn’t stay with me and I don’t know why,” conversation....
Start with the end in mind.
It’s easy, and in this newsletter I’ll show you exactly how to do this, every time.
But before we get to that...
This is what too many Coaches do... They circle the issue. They keep circling, because they want to make sure they’re going to get it right.
They circle some more, just to be REALLY sure. They do this for so long they forget what it was they were here to achieve.
They were here to achieve what the client wants to achieve.
But now it’s too late... it’s become about them, and their need to feel safe and in control. It’s no longer about the client.
They’ve forgotten The Golden Rule – Start with the end in mind, and then make all of your conversations about this end goal.
Nothing else.
Even when it seems you’re both talking about something else, you’re thinking only one thing...
“How does this fit in with the end game my client wants to achieve?”

I make over $1,000/hour as a Coach. Seems crazy, right? It is! But what’s even crazier is that more Coaches could be charging much more than they are if they could focus on The Golden Rule, instead of their need to get it right.
You get to charge more when you learn how to do this because your client gets the results they want FAST and EASY, so in one session you accomplish 10 times more than what many Coaches can achieve.
So while you charge more per session, your client gets much more bang for their buck.
And that’s what you want, right?
So what do you do to get to the point... How do you activate The Golden Rule?
Step One: Get Yourself Out Of The Way
If you need coaching on this, then get it. But it’s not about you, it’s never about you. It’s all about the client.
Your client’s success rests on you not making the session about your own stuff. In our programs we make sure our Coaches get plenty of feedback on this – it starts at the first training because this is so crucial for their success.
Step Two: Ask The Right Questions
Questions like:
What’s this really about?
What does that mean to you?
How do you know it’s time to do that?
What if you didn’t?
What’s the cost of this to you?
What do you get out of doing this?
What do you lose when you do this?
How would someone have given this up?
What’s the one thing you wish was different about this?
There are plenty more questions like this in your manuals and you’ll learn more on the classes you’re attending.
Step Three: Listen For Patterns
People do what works on some level. If it didn’t get rewarded, they wouldn’t do it.
Sometimes this is hard to believe, especially if it’s a habit that seems to hurt us or hold us back.
But what is self-sabotage if not this principle in action?
Let’s say it again: We do what works on some level. If it didn’t get rewarded we wouldn’t do it.
Patterns include:
- Self-sabotage
- Procrastination
- Keep people far away
- Never trusting
- Holding yourself back so you don’t get hurt
- Being childish so you don’t have to take responsibility
- Blaming others
- Denying responsibility
There’s more, but these are enough to get you started! In the meantime, practice looking for any of these patterns and see how you go!
Your client will be relieved when you spot the pattern that’s been holding them back, even if they find it a challenge to believe at first!

Monthly Highlights That Were – May 2009

If you’re in the Advanced Practitioner of Life Coaching Program you would have loved hearing from Paul Andrew this month – Paul is one of the best Coaches around and we’re pretty fortunate that he was able to make himself available so you could learn more about marketing your business.
Diploma Students were blown away this month when Sharon Pearson gave TWO HOURS of her time to answer questions and discuss advanced marketing strategies. She gave feedback on two actual websites, and the whole two hour class is uploaded onto your Diploma Diamond Club Member’s Only Website for you to listen to again!

This training is fully booked, sorry! There are no trainings now until July, which seems ages away! (Although the great news is, Sharon is running that one – it will be huge!)
